With the NEYM Annual
Sessions' theme of "350
Years of New England Friends: Called to Heal a Broken Earth" the
Committee of Racial Social and Economic Justice, in a variety of contexts,
is bringing to this gathering the intersection and impact of global climate
change on justice work of Friends. One such venue is our publication
The Freedom and Justice Crier. This year we are doing just one
issue to be distributed at Sessions and we want it to be great. We intend
for it to be a more magazine type format and invite all New England Friends
to participate in several ways. One way is simply to let us know what
your Meeting has done this year to encourage racial, social or economic
justice.
For example, perhaps you have done something concrete to encourage neighbors and legislators to treat homeless people with dignity and respect. Perhaps you have a committee that works on racial justice issues or how a degraded environment disproportionally effects people of color or the poor.
We would love to hear about anything and everything you and all Meetings around New England are doing. Second, consider writing an article for the publication. For example, how has the issue of white privilege touched your life? How have you seen classism effect Friends? What role, if any, do you think homophobia plays in the FUM hiring practices? Does sexism still exist? What are the spiritual consequences and brokenness? What does that still small voice say to inform us of our responsibilities in this regard? Or is there an article that spoke deeply to you on these concerns that you would like us to republish and which you would be willing to get permission to use? Contact rch@cape.com (June 30th deadline for commitment and ideally at least a rough draft).
