Quaker Way, The

FGC Religious Education Committee ; Wilkinson, Signe , illustrations

Friends General Conference, 1998, 96 pages

Subjects: Quakerism

Grades: 6-8, 9-12

Review:

A kind of primer suitable for junior high readers and up, this tiny book contains eleven chapters on the most distinctive aspects of Friends' belief and practice. It has lots of cute illustrations by Signe Wilkinson. It doesn't get very deep into any of the theological issues, and doesn't even hint that there are Quakers from traditions other than the liberal Universalist one common on the east coast. Nonetheless, it is a compact, handy book for a young adult audience. Some chapter headings : The First Quakers, Beliefs and Creeds, Quaker Testimonies, Meeting for Worship, Advices and Queries, and Prayer. Also contains a bibliography of other works, with brief annotations including advice about reading level. Add'l books needed: none

Race to Justice

Gray, Robin ; Ballester Y Marquez, Jose A.

Unitarian Universalist Association, 1995, 122 pages

Subjects: Social Issues

Grades: 6-8, 9-12

Review:

"A Racial Justice and Diversity Program for Junior High." Based on the premises that racism is wrong, that we want to work to eradicate it, and that each of us can make a difference, Race to Justice celebrates racial, ethnic, cultural, and familial diversity as an enriching fact of life. Students are introduced to concepts of prejudice and individual, cultural & institutional racism. Race to Justice nurtures group-building, encourages intergenerational connections within the congregation, and invites junior highers to affirm important religious values -- particularly our belief in the dignity of all people. Could be adapted for senior high. Features fifteen 60-minute sessions. -NH
