Dear Monthly Meetings,
Poverty and prejudice have not gone away. Indeed, both are again on the rise. NEYM's Prejudice and Poverty Fund was created in the early 1970s out of the spirit of reparations, in the continuing struggle to secure justice and equality for all Americans. This Fund gives financial support to organizations (and occasionally individuals) working to alleviate suffering caused by discrimination in whatever damaging form it takes. Most grants are under $1,000 and are non-renewable.
Grants have supported many worthy causes and over the last five years, including New Bedford Meeting's Peace Garden and Outreach Project, coordinated by Greg Williams; Beacon Hill Friends Meeting's effort to form a Monthly Meeting of Color in Boston's Jamaica Plain; Barnstable Friends Meeting's work on unmet healthcare needs of low income and Wampanoag elders; and Donna McDaniels for her book Fit for Freedom, Not Friendship; and the Maine Human Rights Coalition.
Only a few NEYM committees are authorized to raise money. The Committee of Racial, Social, and Economic Justice (CRSEJ), which administers this fund, is one. We come now to the membership of NEYM, hat proudly in hand, to solicit contributions for this historic and essential fund.
Contributions in any amount earmarked CRSEJ's Prejudice and Poverty Fund are welcome and can be sent to:
